Art & Culture
There is so much more to Hamburg than just the docks and its nightlife: the city is also a gateway to the world of culture and boasts more than 60 museums and upward of 80 galleries featuring an ever-changing array of world-class exhibitions.
Art is an integral part of the Grand Elysée hotel too: the “Galerie im Elysée” and the Block Collection housed in the hotel represent a unique overview of contemporary representational painting in northern Germany.
Max Liebermann – Pioneer of Modern Art
Hamburger Kunsthalle | Until 19 February 2012
The Berlin-based painter Max Liebermann (1847–1935) is considered to have been the pioneer of Impressionism in Germany. He immersed himself in the progressive trends of the day in both France and Holland, studying outdoor painting in Barbizon, the cradle of naturalism, coming into contact with French Impressionism in Paris, and acquainting himself with the Hague School in Holland.
The exhibition features more than a hundred paintings from during his creative period.
International Maritime Museum
Kaispeicher B | Permanent exhibition in the Hafencity
All aboard! Spread across nine themed decks, the International Maritime Museum features more than 100,000 exhibits, ranging from dugout canoes to huge container ships, and from remotely operated underwater vehicles, deep-sea vessels and research ships to a real wall of ice!
And in the treasure chamber, there are ships made of gold, silver and amber. Captains give guided tours of the collection, oceanographers give accounts of their expeditions, and “pirates” take kids on a voyage of discovery.
Alma del Banco: Elbe, Alster, Mediterranean
Ernst Barlach Haus | Until 8 January 2012
Starting out as an Impressionist and going on to co-found the Hamburg Secession group, Alma del Banco (1862–1943) is a key representative of avant-garde art in Hamburg in the 1920s. A showcase exhibition of selected landscape paintings traces the artistic career of this avant-garde painter and committed campaigner for women’s rights. The exhibition coincides with a comprehensive monograph produced by Friederike Weimar, including a catalogue of her works.
