Painting is poetry without words

The Elysée gallery and the Block collection

Christa Block established the gallery at the Elysée in 1985 and ran it with great art expertise and passion until almost the end of her life. The Grand Elysée Hamburg gallery shows changing exhibitions of contemporary representational artworks by artists who live and work in the north of Germany and actively promotes young up-and-coming artists. The Block collection is comprised of more than 1,250 works and is one of the region's most important private representational art collections. The hotel guests as well as visitors are more than welcome to visit the gallery.

Elysée Prize

The Elysée Prize for Painting, established to support emerging regional talent, is endowed with €10,000 and has already been awarded 12 times at universities in northern Germany to selected students.

The prize is decided by an independent jury made up of artists, art historians and cultural journalists. As part of the award ceremony, submitted works are displayed in an exhibition at the Galerie im Elysée.

After the Elysée Prize exhibition, selected works are purchased and incorporated into the Block Collection. They are permanently displayed in the corridors on the 5th floor of the Grand Elysée Hamburg and can be viewed there. An overview of past Elysée Prize winners can be found here.
