The entrance building with its domed roof, the historic hand-operated freight lifts and the tunnel tubes decorated with reliefs... a stroll through the 426m long old Elbe tunnel (opened in 1911) is well worth it. During the Second World War, it was used by numerous Hamburg residents as an air-raid shelter, although a bombing raid could easily have caused water to pour into the tube. Nowadays, the old Elbe tunnel is a Hamburg landmark that is driven every day by numerous Hamburg residents, but it has also become a tourist attraction and the setting for photos and films.
